Charles Cattermole specialised in scenes of romantic chivalry and the medieval past. This painting was inspired by Richard D Blackmore's popular Victorian novel Lorna Doone- A Romance of Exmoor which was set in 17th Century Devon and Somerset, first published in 1869.
