Notes: Pawlowski was a fierce patriot. He fought in the Warsaw uprising in the later stages of the Second World War; represented his country as an olympic fencer and was imprisoned for spying against the Warsaw Pact in the late 1970's. He took up painting while in prison and on release followed this passion for the rest of his life.
