David Hockney (British b.1937) The Older Rapunzel

David Hockney (British b.1937) The Older Rapunzel, etching and aquatint, 1969, from Rapunzel for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm, measurements 22 x 25 cm, frame 48 x 49 cm

Provenance: consigned from a private, local collector who purchased from the Goldmark Gallery

In 1969 Hockney created a series of etchings to illustrate six of his favourite stories from the Brothers Grimms Fairy Tales. He chose to use the clear lines of etching to reflect the simple, direct style of language used in these childhood stories and really explore the supernatural and psychological aspects of the tales.

Sold for £1,800

Condition Report

The etching is a work on paper framed under glazing, not examined external to the frame. It has full margins and visible platemark. There is some minor cockling and one small isolated spot of foxing in the centre- to the left of Rapunzel's rump (please refer to photographs). There are some grey spots in the background which do not appear to be damaging the print. General wear and tear to the frame.
