Lot 236

Allen Culpepper Sealy (English, 1850-1927) Sans Souci, A Bay Stallion

Allen Culpepper Sealy (English, 1850-1927), Sans Souci, a bay stallion standing in a loose box, signed and dated lower left ‘1892’, oil on canvas, 64 x 76cm, frame 94 x 107cm

Purchased from School House Antiques, Chipping Camden in 1990s.

Provenance:

Purchased from School House Antiques, Chipping Camden in 1990s.

Footnote:

Sans Souci was an important stallion of the Hermit sire line, the leading French stud of the Rothschilds. A winner of the Grand Prix de Paris, amongst many other important trophies he sired good stallions and broodmares with long lasting effects on French pedigrees. Sans Souci was a bay colt born in 1904 and died in 1925. It is unlikely this is a painting of Sans Souci, however, as the date on the painting precedes the colt’s birth by 12 years

Sealy exhibited at the RA from 1875 to 1886 (including 'Tramps, Hazley Heath, Hants'), Suffolk Street (Royal Society of British Artists) and elsewhere. He was a landscape and genre artist.

Sold for £550
