John Bratby RA (1928-1992) was a British 20th century painter from Wimbledon. He is credited with founding the Kitchen Sink realism cultural movement in the 1950s, alongside fellow artists Derrick Greaves, Edward Middleditch and Jack Smith. The movement saw artists using everyday objects as subjects and is often characterised by thickly laden paintings, it is considered an aspect of John Osborne's 'Angry Young Men' movement. Bratby typically painted in very bright colours, his later works becoming even lighter and more exuberant.
