Thomas Sidney Cooper, R.A., (British, 1803-1902), cattle and sheep by a river, signed and dated 'T.Sidney Cooper R.A. 1862?' lower right, label verso 'Charles Robertson & Co, Artists' Colour Makers...', slip stencilled with artist's name, oil on panel, lacking frame and some damage, including bitumen bubbling, 45 x 61cm, slip 52 x 67.5cm
Provenance:Private West Midland's estate. Part of a collection formed from the late 19th century. Thence by descent.
Footnote:This is typical of the artist’s output in the 19th century, which was principally cattle and sheep in pastoral settings and was produced by the demand generated by its popularity. Unsurprisingly, his soubriquet was 'Cow Cooper'. T.S.Cooper was made a Royal Academician in 1867 and Canterbury City Council, The Tate and The British Museum all exhibit his work. In fact he exhibited 266 works from 1833 until 1902, which is a record. He was a friend of the Belgian artist, Verboeckhoven, who inspired and influenced both his subject matter and style, along with the 17th century Dutch School. This painting is one of two Coopers in this collection.
