The case with brass inlaid fluted pilasters flanking the door, the 14in dial with Roman chapter, the single-train weight driven movement with four knopped pillars and anchor escapement.

A dynasty of Simpsons are recorded at Broad Row, Great Yarmouth, starting with Richard Snr. (c1737-1820), Richard Jnr. (c1763-1825) and William Manley (fl.1822-1868).

Condition Report


  • Case: Fair to good condition with some minor signs of age and use including: Chip to corner of each side door; split inside pendulum door; area of craquelure/crinkling to veneers between dial and main door; main door warped at the bottom; hinges to main door replaced; case back with drill holes for wall mounting; evidence of old worm to the top of the case. No keys to the main door or dial door.

  • Dial: Some craquelure overall, not disfiguring but more pronounced to the edges.  No evidence or over-painting.  Minor paint loss around winding hole.

  • Movement: Has been cleaned and appears intact.  Seat board replaced.  Not tested. No crank/winder present.

  • Ancillaries: Weight and pendulum appear original or, at least, are contemporaneous.
