A pair of Coalport ornithological vases and covers painted by John Randall, circa 1871
of tripartite shield-form, each side finely painted with birds of prey and parrots perched on branches, divided by vertical pilasters enriched with diamond pattern straps, on a conforming socle, unmarked, 45.5cm high (2)

Provenance: Ivor Southorn Collection. Ex. lot label for Christie's, lot 153, 12th May 1994. These are very similar to a vase and cover painted by Randall which was exhibited in the 1871 Exhibition. This lot was previously loaned to the Coalport Museum for the 'Coalport at the Court of the Tsar -1996 Bicentenary Exhibition'.

Condition Report

Both covers restored. One foot has been broken and re-bolted, some wear. The other vase has some good quality restoration to the foot. Nothing shows up under UV but it looks like there was a crack which has been filled and colour matched with the area around it over painted. No further signs of damages.
