Footnote:

Akos Biro (1911-2002) was a Hungarian painter who studied at the Budapest School of Fine Arts under Gyula Rudnay, winning a scholarship to the Hungarian Academy in Rome. He spent a number of years in Paris and Biarritz before returning to Budapest to establish his own studio there. During the turbulence of World War Two he and his family went into hiding and he then relocated to Paris again in 1947. His work is characterised by bold, bright colour, beginning as a figurative painter, but from the 1950s his work becomes much more expressionist in nature.
