The Summer Auction

Lot 161

An early 18th century English glass onion bottle

A nicely patinated green glass bottle
early 18th century
of onion shape, with a deep kick to the base and a double line-strung lip to the mouth,
15cm high.

Provenance:

Provenance: This bottle was found hidden in a cellar by the occupants of Old Idsall House in Shifnal. The cellar, which was previously unknown to the occupants, was found during routine building work near the back door of the property. Signs of an original foundation prompted further investigation and revealed a cellar complete with an intact set of shelves holding three sealed onion bottles. Sadly, however, the original contents and seals did not survive the bottles being cleaned soon after their discovery. Old Idsall House is believed to be the oldest property in Shifnal, with elements dating back to the 16th century. From around 1760, it was also run as Shifnal's first Post Office by Thomas Sambrook.
