A group of documents pertaining to the Panzergrenadier Division "Großdeutschland"
comprising a Iron Cross 2nd class certificate awarded to "Obergefreiten Karl Höhne 5./ Pz. Aufkl Abt. Großdeutschland" (Reconaissance Battalion), dated 26 May 1944 and signed by the division commander Hasso von Manteuffel.
Sold together with a typed letter addressed to dated 6 August 1944. The letter, which is written on Feldpost military paper and presumably addressed to the wounded soldier's father (Karl Hohne Sr.), sends thanks for advising the Squadron of his son's health and recovery following being injured. A request to be sent future updates on his condition is made alongside a reiteration of pride in the squadron's current strength and power.
The letter further translates as, "At the same time, we are pleased to announce that your son has been awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class for his outstanding achievements, his guts and his bravery, which we will be sending you. We ask that you bring it to him yourself and convey our warmest congratulations. All members of the squadron send your son the warmest greetings in loyal comradeship and wish him a speedy and good recovery." Signed, Captain and squadron chief.
Further included is a small note with envelope advising Karl Hohne they are sending his son's Iron Cross 2nd Class to him, dated 29.8.1944, signed in pencil by a Hauptwachtmeister; a further a Feldpost enveloped addressed to Obergefreiter Karl Höhne dated 19.12.44; a "Kameradschaft Großdeutschland" single-sided leaflet and a blank application leaflet for the Registered Association of Soldiers and Former Members of the Großdeutschland division alongside a black and white printed photograph of Manteuffel.
