A commemorative oak silver mounted wheel barrow and spade, Stephen Smith and William Nicholson, London 1861 the wheelbarrow with beaded borders and silver foliate capped handle ends and silver mounted spoked front wheel, the front interior panel applied with an oval pierced plaque with spear head border bearing a coat of arms and Latin motto 'Perseverando' the spade with oak rope twist handle with beaded silver mounts, the shield shaped blade with applied foliate mounts and inscribed 'This spade and barrow were presented to Mrs Dugdale of Llwyn on the occasion of her cutting the first sod of the Llanfyllin Railway by Mr Thomas Savin contractor, Friday September 20th 1861' the blade also marked with Smith & Nicholson, Duke Street, Lincoln Fields, the lot also accompanied by a song sheet with lines composed 'upon the occasion of cutting the first sod of the railway at Llanfyllin September 20th 1861 by I. Glan Abel the spade 87cm long, the wheel barrow 118cm long 61cm wide, 48cm high NOTE: Llanfyllin Railway opened from Llanymynech via Llansantffraid Llanfechain and Bryngwyn in 1863 to allow access to the limestone quarries along the Llanfyllin Railway and the main line from Oswestry to Newtown including the branch line to Llanfyllin closed in 1965 under British Railway's Beeching axe
