Consigned from a Deceased Estate

The Vollard Suite is the name given to a group of 100 etchings created by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) during the years 1930-1937 for art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939). Picasso worked on the series during the years where fascism was spreading through Europe and Civil War errupting in Spain and many of the anxieties of this era are expressed in the Vollard Suite compositions. Many of the etchings feature Picasso's mistress Marie-Therese Walker, including the Female Bullfighter II. Due to Vollard's unexpected death in 1939 and the outbreak of World War Two, the Vollard Suite did not appear on the open market until the 1950s.

Condition Report

This is an etching on paper, mounted and framed under glazing. The etching has full margins and is signed in pencil below right, with a pencil inventory number 377 in the bottom left corner of the sheet. There is some ageing to the paper and browing around the edges of the sheet and mount. The mount has ageing and some faint foxing on the reverse but this does not extend onto the etching paper itself. The etching sheet appears in good condition without any obvious signs of rips, tears or creasing. There is some slight cockling to the lower right area. The frame has general wear and tear, has solid joints.
