Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) was born in Bradford and studied at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros before training at Academie Julian in Paris, working with James McNeil Whistler and Edgar Degas, whilst sharing a studio with Charles Conder in Monmartre. He founded the Carfax Gallery which became associated with artists such as Charles Ricketts, August John and Auguste Rodin.
